Yearly economic security measured for the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization: 🧵
BTC = $9.7B (0.4%)
ETH = $51.9B (9%)
XRP = $0.0B
BNB = $0.0B
SOL = $22.7B (22%)
DOGE = $0.1B (0.2%)
TRX = $5.1B (15%)
ADA = $5.7B (19%)
SUI = $3.7B (27%)
HBAR = $0.0B
Truth cuts through all the noise & the BS narratives, as economic security can be measured objectively!
The "cost to attack" can be precisely calculated, determining the security budget for each chain individually:
For PoW, the math is the yearly security budget, inflation + fees divided by the attack threshold (51%)
For PoS, the math is the market capitalization + fees divided by the staking participation rate & then divided again by the attack threshold (33%)
Here are the full calculations as of earlier today: 🎓
BTC 19.06B+0.03B x 0.51 = $9.7B (0.4%)
ETH 542B+0.94B x 0.29 x 0.33 = $51.9 (9%)
XRP 0+0 x 0 x 0 = $0.0B
BNB 0+0 x 0 x 0 = $0.0B
SOL 100B+1.15B x 0.68 x 0.33 = $22.7B (22%)
DOGE 0.15+0.01B x 0.51 = $0.1B
TRX 33B+0.9B x 0.46 x 0.33 = $5.1B (15%)
ADA 29B+0.01B x 0.60 x 0.33 = $5.7B (19%)
SUI 13.6B+0.01B x 0.75 x 0.33 = $3.7B (27%)
HBAR 0+0 x 0 x 0 = $0.0B
The second number expressed as a percentage represents the ratio between security & market capitalization. This is an important metric for understanding security, as the bigger the bounty, the greater an attacker might be willing to spend. If this ratio falls too low, attacks become far more probable
This also clearly exposes PoW as an inferior technology from a security perspective, since even with much lower market capitalization, ETH & SOL beat BTC's security right now, contrary to "popular belief". PoS is, in fact, way more secure than PoW, by several orders of magnitude even, since PoS chains benefit far more from higher market capitalization
There are also a bunch of permissioned networks in the top 10, which rely on trust instead of economic security (XRP, BNB & HBAR). Therefore, we have to assign these projects an economic security of $0. Because they are based on a different type of consensus algorithm; PoA (Proof of Authority). Which, unlike PoW & PoS, do not rely on economic security!
So, based on economic security alone, the most secure chain today is ETH!
SOL takes the second place & BTC takes the third place!
We can choose to be led by narratives, cults & fantasy, or we can choose to be informed through the scientific method & rationality. So next time someone claims BTC is the most secure or SOL is insecure, show them these numbers & let them argue against reality
Decentralization & security matters, so we have to start being more honest about these facts so that the market can re-evaluate value based on the reality of security & decentralization instead of the predominant mythos
Truth has to be our guide, not hype or politics, as that is how we bring about the best possible crypto future for everyone! 🔥
