With @jump_ into storage, can @Aptos be turned over by Shelby? @Foresight_News
Jump brought @doublezero and other king-level projects to @shelbyserves, and $APT responded by 30%
On the evening of June 24, Aptos announced the launch of a new storage protocol, Shelby, in conjunction with crypto giant Jump Crypto. This is Jump Crypto's first big move since its return to crypto on June 19. As soon as the news came out, the market reacted quickly - #APT soared by 30%, from 4.2 USDT to 5.13 USDT, the best performance in recent times.
Jump Crypto, which participated in Aptos Labs' $150 million Series A funding round in 2022, is known for its "accumulation" and engineering capabilities, such as Solana's highly anticipated validator client@jump_firedancer Jump is a major contributor. As the first high-profile entry project since Jump's return, Shelby has brought attention to Aptos and the "imagination space" for ecological linkage to recreate prosperity.
But there are also doubts. Sui was the first to launch the storage protocol Walrus, but is Aptos copying a competitor's strategy? Let's dive into Shelby.
1️⃣ Shelby, "Hot Storage Protocol"
From Cold to Hot: A Paradigm Change in Web3 Storage
In the infrastructure narrative of Web3, decentralized storage has always been an unavoidable topic. However, for a long time, this field has been dominated by "cold storage": suitable for storing infrequently accessed and long-term stored data, such as NFT metadata, backups, etc. Typical representatives, such as @Filecoin and @ArweaveEco, emphasize durability and cost optimization, but may not be able to meet the requirements of high-frequency and high-real-time scenarios.
Shelby is a "hot storage" solution for this pain point.
According to the official definition, Shelby is the first "cloud-grade infra" in the Web3 world, with features such as sub-second reads, native incentives, and chain-independent compatibility.
It not only allows data to be stored, but also makes data streamable, usable, and priceable, covering Web3 application scenarios that require high real-time performance, such as video streaming, AI output, dynamic NFTs, and game assets.
Shelby currently uses #Aptos as its preferred settlement layer, orchestrating real-time data streams with its 600 millisecond final confirmations, 30,000 TPS, and ultra-low gas fees. Shelby will launch a developer testnet in Q4 2025.
@AveryChing, CEO of Aptos Labs, pointed out in his personal article, "Web3 assets can be exchanged in seconds, but data is still in a static and difficult state, and Shelby aims to solve this key bottleneck."
Backed by Jump, Shelby isn't simply "fast"
If Aptos is known for its high concurrency and high throughput, then Jump Crypto is a battle-hardened veteran of high-frequency trading and real-time systems. The fundamental reason why Shelby dares to call it "hot storage" is the characteristics of its underlying architecture:
1. High-speed synchronization of global nodes supported by a dedicated optical fiber backbone network;
2. The edge caching system ensures content localization and read speed as fast as sub-seconds.
3. Clay code redundancy mechanism is adopted to reduce replication costs and ensure repair efficiency.
4. Encryption + paid read mechanism natively supports usage-based monetization logic;
5. Support smart contract definition access control and DRM, one-stop processing from data distribution to copyright protection.
This design is not just about making a faster @IPFS (the most famous decentralized storage network), but trying to merge the performance standards of Web2 with the decentralization principles of Web3 to create a programmable, monetizable, and scalable data circulation network.
2️⃣ The king-level project has been settled, and the community has heated discussions
$APT The price has risen by about 30% rapidly, in addition to the endorsement of Jump Crypto, but also due to the luxurious lineup of a number of ecological projects attracted by Shelby, such as @Metaplex, @StoryProtocol, @DoubleZero, etc., which are not only the most active data-intensive applications in the industry, but also a representative of the value of Web3 data use on various chains.
Metaplex is rooted in Solana, and DoubleZero was founded by @Austin_Federa, the former head of strategy at Solana. Does the Solana ecological project in which Jump is deeply involved also participate in the construction of the Aptos ecosystem, does it mean that there is really "something" behind Shelby that has been recognized by everyone?
The community's interpretation of Shelby has also been incredibly positive.
Some have contrasted it with @WalrusProtocol and pointed out that the purpose of the two services is very different: Walrus favors cold storage and archiving, while Shelby focuses on real-time consumption and revenue distribution; The former relies on infrequent access and audit incentives, while the latter converts every data read into a payment behavior, fundamentally incentivizing the improvement of data readability.
It is also pointed out that Shelby's encryption + paid read mechanism provides a paradigm breakthrough for the long-standing difficult "read incentive" problem in the field of data availability.
Compared with projects such as @Celestia and Walrus, which still rely on external funding subsidies to maintain services, Shelby directly integrates user behavior into the economic closed loop, driving nodes to actively maintain data availability.
3️⃣ Higher Vision: More than just a turnaround for Aptos
Although the release of Shelby is an important move for Aptos to seek ecological breakthroughs, its broader significance may lie in the fact that it is the first time to use the concept of "data as a native asset" to try to deeply integrate the content economy, creator economy and on-chain infrastructure. This not only serves Aptos itself, but also radiates to the entire multi-chain world through its "chain-agnostic" nature.
Aptos Labs has repeatedly emphasized Shelby's composability and cross-chain capabilities in the announcement: whether you are deploying dynamic NFTs on Solana or building a RAG model on Ethereum Layer 2, Shelby can achieve fast access and revenue linkage through standardized interfaces. In the future, it will also be expanded to on-chain environments such as Cosmos and Modular Stack.
Combined with Aptos' original Global Trading Engine, Shelby complements the capabilities of value generation: the former allows assets to flow freely, while the latter makes content an asset with measurable value. The two complement each other, and Aptos is trying to create a closed loop on the on-chain economy.
4️⃣ Write at the end: the possibility and challenge of turning the tables
From the technical design to the cooperation lineup, from the ecological landing to the market sentiment, Shelby is undoubtedly a high-scoring answer sheet delivered by Aptos at the infrastructure level.
When Walrus made a large airdrop, igniting the @SuiNetwork ecological wealth effect, Aptos was once regarded as a "bystander"; Now, Jump's Shelby may be the breakthrough point for its return to the central narrative.
Of course, there are still challenges: the difficulty of delivering performance, the cost of developer migration, and the early ecosystem cold start...... These will be the next realities for Shelby. But at least from a market and technology perspective, Aptos is no longer satisfied with being a "faster and cheaper public chain", but is seeking innovation and change, betting on a new paradigm of data-driven on-chain economy.
When the hot data really flows, the next wave of Web3 may bring Aptos back to center stage.
